We are pleased to announce the recipient of the 2025 EACL Early Career Researcher Award, following the Association’s inaugural conference in Berlin in September 2025.
The 2025 Award goes to Martje Köppen for her paper:
“Slipping through the ‘Net’ in Net Zero? The Ambiguous Role of Carbon Dioxide Removal in the European Climate Law.”
The paper was ranked first by the award review committee. The reviewers particularly highlighted the paper’s originality, its detailed analysis of the ambiguous treatment of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) in European climate law, and its contribution to understanding the implications of this ambiguity for the effectiveness of the EU climate framework.
The EACL Early Career Researcher Award recognises outstanding research by early-career scholars that makes an original and significant contribution to the field of European climate law. It reflects the EACL’s commitment to supporting the next generation of climate law scholars and to fostering high-quality research within the European climate law community.
The award will be formally presented during the Second EACL Annual Conference in Helsinki on 17–18 September 2026.
